Leadership is everything. But in our business, leadership alone may not be enough. There is often a misunderstanding about the role of a leader versus that of a builder.
In fact, many people prefer to be a Leader rather than a Builder. When they have people under them, they want to lead so badly that they forget they really need to be a Builder first. They develop "leadership" skills like public speaking, teaching, and motivating instead of doing, field training, duplicating and showing results. They get so good, so slick, so high-level, so complicated that one day they're no longer duplicatable.
There are areas in life that need leaders. But in a system where DUPLICATION is key, BUILDERS are needed. In building systems like Wal Mart, Starbuck's, McDonald's, or Home Depot, you don't really hear a lot about their leaders, but you know they have a lot of silent builders.
LEADER'S TRAP: After hitting the Executive position, many people fall into this trap and a good number of leaders slow down their building efforts significantly.
That's the builder what I want to be in our business.
